The indices

Four regions, one consistent method

Each index measures, day by day, how intensively the news reports conflict and threat. Pick a region to explore the interactive charts, country breakdowns, and downloads.

MENA GPR

Arabic-language news · 2015–2026
MENA GPR

The first daily geopolitical-risk index built entirely from Arabic-language news, with breakdowns by country, actor, event type, city and oil corridor.

African GPR

54 countries · 1979–2026
Africa GPR

A daily, country-level index for every African state, from the global news-event record, with regional series and a threats-versus-acts split.

European GPR

40 countries · 1979–2026
Europe GPR

Daily geopolitical risk for forty European countries, with a separate index per country, regional aggregates, and a threats-versus-acts decomposition.

South America GPR

12 countries · 2015–2026
South America GPR

Built from local South American outlets in Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch and English — the region read the way it reports itself, with subregional series.

Methodology

Built from the news, transparently

Every index follows the same reproducible three-step pipeline, adapted to each region and its languages.

1

Collect

Millions of news reports gathered from the global GDELT news database, covering each region continuously and in its own languages.

2

Screen & read

Filter to geopolitical content — conflict, terror, insurgency, coups, sanctions, border tension — using a transparent, language-independent screen.

3

Aggregate

Average daily, normalize to a common baseline so levels are comparable over time and across countries, and validate against known events.

Research

Peer-grade, openly published

The indices are documented in working papers on SSRN and backed by a program of published research in finance and economics.
