Every morning a program reads the prices posted on Moroccan online shops. It identifies itself as a bot, follows each site's robots.txt rules and sends few requests. Each product sits in one of the 12 COICOP categories that the Haut-Commissariat au Plan (HCP) uses for the official consumer price index.
Each product keeps one price per day. If a price is missing, the last price is kept for up to 7 days, then the product leaves the sample.
For each product we take the daily price change. Changes bigger than about 2.7 times up or down are treated as errors and removed.
A category's daily change is the geometric average of its products' changes. Categories with fewer than 5 products that day are held flat and flagged.
Category changes are combined with HCP's base-2017 expenditure weights, rescaled to the categories we cover.
The daily changes are chained into an index equal to 100 on the first day.
What it covers. Goods sold online: food, clothing, household goods, electronics and more. It does not cover rent, education fees, souk prices or services, so it complements the HCP index rather than replacing it. Prices include promotions.
